Our theme this year is “Catholic Education can light the way for our children”.
As I have reflected upon this theme, I have asked myself the obvious question, “How?”
I borrowed the words from Matthew’s Gospel, … “You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is put on a lamp stand, where it gives light to all the house. Just so, your light must shine before others that they may see the good deeds and glorify your Heavenly Father.”…
Now, I don’t believe that Saint Matthew had Catholic schools in mind when he penned those words. Nonetheless, I do believe that they apply to what we try to do in Catholic schools. We teachers and you parents, our children’s first teachers, have as our mission to light the way for them, with our words, with our example, with our modeling of Christian community. We are rightly proud to build our city on a towering hill. We place our lamp on a lamp stand for them to see, to light their way. And as our children grow, they too become shining beacons of Christian community, lighting the way for our neighbors. We live and teach and grow this way in order to glorify our Heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, the reason for our school, with the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. It is a perpetual cycle. Catholic schools are proud to Light the Way. It is our mission, our purpose.
